WARDOGS Explained: The Middle Ground Between Battlefield and Arma 🪖
Large-scale military shooters usually fall into one of two categories. They are either fast, accessible and chaotic, or highly realistic and complex.
WARDOGS is trying to find the space between them.
Developed by BULKHEAD and published by Team17, WARDOGS is an upcoming tactical first-person shooter with up to 100 players, large battlefields, combined-arms combat and destructible environments.
It has some of the scale and chaos players remember from Battlefield, mixed with the tactical freedom commonly associated with games like Arma. However, WARDOGS is not simply trying to copy either of them.
Three Teams Enter the Battlefield ⚔️
Instead of the usual battle between two opposing sides, WARDOGS divides up to 100 players between three factions.
All three teams fight over the same randomized Control Zone. The faction with the most players inside the zone earns points, and the first team to reach 100 points wins the match.
The addition of a third faction makes battles much less predictable. Your team could be attacking one enemy while the third faction approaches from another direction. A position that looked secure a few minutes ago can quickly turn into a fight on two fronts.
Because the Control Zone can appear in different locations, teams must also adapt to different terrain, buildings and routes instead of repeating exactly the same strategy every match.
Large-Scale Warfare Without the Walking Simulator 🗺️
WARDOGS takes place across large maps, but players are not expected to spend the entire match jogging toward distant gunfire.
Ground vehicles and helicopters move soldiers around the battlefield, while the active Control Zone keeps the three factions focused on the same general area. This creates large engagements without making every part of the map feel equally crowded.
You can expect infantry battles inside buildings, vehicles fighting across open terrain and helicopters moving above the action, sometimes all within the same engagement.
The result looks chaotic from a distance, but every squad can approach the battle differently.
Tactical, but Still a Game 🎮
WARDOGS describes itself as a hardcore shooter that does not forget it is a game.
Weapons are dangerous, positioning matters and blindly running across open ground will probably end exactly how you expect. At the same time, the developers are not attempting to simulate every part of military life.
The goal is to create tactical firefights without requiring new players to study a 200-page field manual before joining their first match.
That places WARDOGS somewhere between Battlefield and Arma. It is more deliberate and punishing than a typical arcade shooter, but more accessible than a full military simulation.
Vehicles Are Part of the Battle 🚁
WARDOGS features combined-arms combat with infantry, ground vehicles and flyable helicopters sharing the battlefield.
Vehicles are not only there to collect kills. They can move players across the map, bring them closer to the active zone or support an attack from another angle.
Naturally, getting into a helicopter still requires a certain amount of trust in the pilot. Sometimes you receive a perfect landing behind cover. Sometimes you receive a very quick demonstration of the game’s destruction system.
Build It, Defend It, Destroy It 💥
Players can construct defenses and establish fortified positions around important locations.
These structures can help turn exposed areas into defensible positions, but nothing should be considered completely safe. WARDOGS also includes environmental destruction, allowing vehicles and explosives to change parts of the battlefield.
A building might provide excellent cover during one attack and become a pile of rubble during the next. Teams must react when their position is damaged instead of relying on the same protected corner throughout the entire match.
Communication Creates the Best Moments 🎙️
WARDOGS includes squad communication and proximity voice chat, allowing nearby players to coordinate even when they are not part of the same organized group.
That should also create plenty of unscripted moments. Large multiplayer battles are often at their best when a carefully planned attack works perfectly, or when everything goes horribly wrong within ten seconds.
WARDOGS appears to understand that these player-created stories are a major part of the appeal.
Is WARDOGS Like Battlefield or Arma?
The comparison is useful, but it does not tell the full story.
Battlefield players will recognize the large battles, vehicles, destruction and unpredictable action. Arma players may appreciate the larger maps, tactical movement, player freedom and importance of communication.
WARDOGS aims to make these elements more approachable without removing the consequences that make tactical shooters exciting.
It is not Battlefield with a different name, and it is not a simplified version of Arma. It is BULKHEAD’s attempt to create something between the two.
When Does WARDOGS Release? 📅
WARDOGS is scheduled to enter Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026.
The game will continue to receive new features and improvements throughout Early Access, so the launch version will not represent the finished game. However, its large-scale three-faction warfare already gives it an identity that stands out in a crowded shooter market.
If you miss large multiplayer battles but want something more tactical than a traditional arcade shooter, WARDOGS is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
